Hurricane Ike

Interstate I-10
I hope everyone who experienced Hurricane Ike last Friday & Saturday are slowly getting back to life. I didn’t sleep at all Friday night/ Saturday morning. The winds were howling and telling their own stories…which by Saturday morning the destruction was evident all through the city of Houston. We lost power at 2:00 a.m. Saturday morning (9/13/08) and are still without power.

Things were intense from 3:30 a.m.-6:45 a.m. I could feel my sister’s brand new three story brick house start to shake, with what felt like an earthquake at times. I heard a very very loud snapping, whipping noise then saw flashes of bright yellowish/reddish lights from the front door window. I was listening to a battery operated radio and reports were coming in of transformers blowing out— I figured that was what I witnessed.

The sky was angry and even after the storm Ike has left his mark on Galveston, Houston, Bolivar Peninsula Surfside, Baytown…. and that’s just a short list. Driving through parts of my neighborhood is a surreal feeling. Parts of Houston look like the San Antonio Riverwalk. The normal roads I take to work look like Venice, its so crazy.

It made we want to cry to see the destruction to our city— however I am impressed with how many utility vehicles, Houston public work trucks, damage relief trucks on the streets. People are working hard to restore our sanity.

The grocery stores were in a frenzy Sunday morning, people were still in a desperate state. Food was flying off the shelves faster then I’ve ever seen. Lines for gasoline were wrapping around 3-4 blocks. Luckily we live in an area where we can ride bikes around for everything we need. Rowan always walked to work, so no change there. I was supposed to leave for Palm Springs for a tennis convention yesterday (9/16/08) but I didn’t feel right leaving my family during this time.

I checked out the local tennis courts on my side of town and Spott’s Park was hit very bad. Huge trees cut the once manicured black fence to bits. The whole court is covered by tree limbs and debris from wooden fences across the street. Regardless, people were still playing tennis…. that really brought a smile to my face!!

Our surf spots in Galveston and Surfside may well be closed for an indefinite amount of time. I feel for the residents who have homes on the coast and who are returning to shambles and tears. I have wonderful memories of Galveston and hope they can start to heal.

this is the road i normally take to work– memorial @ waugh

The family that plays together stays together!

After spending time with the Mendoza family we were just as excited to hang out with my cousin Elen (on my mom’s side) her husband Noel and two damn near cutest kids you could ever hang out with~Aiden and Logan. First this family doesn’t stop playing, ever. Their house is like a toy house for both kids and grown-ups. I swear it was like going to an amusement park!

Rowan and I were introduced to the Nintendo Wii Fit, then we played Rock Band (which is amazing, because i am the anti video person…but it rocked :D). If we had more time we would of probably gone on their boat to wakeboard, or take the jet ski’s out for a spin. Oh yeah Noel also has a dune buggy he’s working on…..and of course the family snowboards as well!

Aiden is five and Logan is two. Aiden is an awesome little snowboarder/wakeboarder and he can also play Buddy Holly on the drums during Rock Band! Logan is two, the best way to describe him is like a tank that runs over people. He’s so rough and tough but very, very smiley and happy kid. I’m sure in no time he’ll be doing all the action sports like Aiden, well unless he takes up football first!

We spent our only afternoon with the family at Leucadia beach. The beach was awesome, and of course Rowan and I rented boards. What came as a surprise to us was….. Elen and Noel have never taken the kids to the beach in San Diego. Sure they’ve been to the beach in Mexico, but not in their own city! Yeah Rowan and I felt pretty special.

Rowan taught little Aiden to surf and he stood up quite a few times…in fact I think Aiden caught more waves then both of us! We figured it only made sense for Aiden to learn surfing, now he has the all around action sports experience!

Elen and Noel make being in their family fun, those kids are going to grow up so stoked and NEVER EVER want to leave their mom and dad’s house :D

Thanks guys we had a blast!!!

ooh la la…..

What a great weekend! A friend of mine, Anya Lloyd opened her boutique, Chicle de Anya, on Houston’s most eclectic street in the Heights. I met Anya in our Fashion Sketching class a little over a year ago.  She’s an amazing artist with a good eye for funky style that works. I was so impressed with her store front and the over all feeling of her space.  She is selling her own creations as well as stocking her boutique full of fun, youthful fashions that are all grown up at the same time– its a great balance!

If that isn’t enough to make you want to check her store out….then go for the cool styles she imports from Japan that you won’t find any where else in H-town!

Way to go Anya I am so stoked for you!

Tennis & Surf Anyone?

The last two nights of our Costa Rican vaction was spent at 15 Love Bed and Breakfast, a tennis hotel that also offers surf lessons. Rowan and I had to check this place out. Oliver & Emily are the wonderful owners of this beautiful bed and breakfast.  I couldn’t believe that a place like this existed.  Its my two favorite passions in life all rolled into one.

We shared stories of how K-Claw started and Oliver and Emily shared their experiences about building the hotel and making tennis the center of its activities. The courts were in great condition and the whole hotel was decorated with so much much pizzaz and modern amenities.  The breakfast they served up was fresh and delicious.  The next time my ladies doubles team needs to practice, I think we’ll consider making this place our home court :D

Rowan and I played tennis the first night, and after 4-5 hours of surfing for the last seven days, we weren’t very agile. Regardless, we had a fun time complaining about how sore we were while we chased tennis balls around.

We met two cool couples the same age as us, Jamie & Kate from London and Karina & Tiness (i know i spelled his name wrong..sorry) from Zurich. Karina is cardiologist, Tiness a dentist, Jamie a realtor and Kate works for The British Independent Films.

The last night we played doubles with both Emily & Oliver.  Emily’s got a really wicked forehand, but it makes sense since her husband is the tennis pro! It was really fun to hang out with those guys.  Rowan and I always admire people who are passionate about what they do, it inspires us to do the best we can with K-Claw!

Last night in Costa Rica!

Good Obsessions in Costa Rica

Howdy Folks! Rowan and I just got back from Costa Rica last week, man it was difficult to get on the plane back to H-town. We spent 7 awesome nights at Playa Guiones, which is located on the North Pacific side of Costa Rica. The last two nights we stayed at a tennis & surf camp in Tamarindo.

I decided Costa Rica would be the best place to satisfy my new surfing obsession and my 30th b-day. We signed up for surf lessons at Innocent Surf School. Ru & Gem are the kick ass owners of this establishment. Jack is another instructor at Innocent and we had the pleasure of surfing with him our last day. By the seventh day Rowan and I were soooo incredibly tired, but luckily Jack had enough charisma and enthusiasm for all three of us! We had so much fun learning how to surf that we’ve convinced ourselves we need to live by the beach!

Rowan and I shared our experiences starting up K-Claw with Ru & Gem, and now they are scheming up plans to offer Innocent Surf School apparel from rash guards, t-shirts to bikinis. I know these two will succeed, they have such good energy about them.

Playa Guiones was a wonderful place to visit. There were a lot of ex-pats living in the area and friendly locals. I chose this place because it was less touristy than other beaches in Costa Rica. I didn’t want to shop, bar hop or do organized trips… I just wanted to sit in a hammock and surf all day long.

We met a lot of cool and interesting people during the surf lessons. Netysha left her job on Wall Street and decided to surf for two months and write a blog about her experiences, Surfing Nosara. I totally respect her for taking the time to follow her passion–it takes a lot of courage to do that. Patrick her boyfriend was a hilarious dude that we enjoyed surfing with. He always had a way with words in the water, especially when a set was about to pound us in the impact zone! We also had a little visitor everyday for breakfast, Tico the cat. Since we were in the jungle, we called him our jungle cat. I love cats so Tico just made our vacation more perfect.

My birthday couldn’t of been any better. I was in the water caught a few good waves, saw an amazing sunset and then had a wonderful dinner with eight people we just met. I had the largest grin on my face the whole day, thanks guys!!

Surfing & Tennis

I’ve never been so excited about a sport before, although I must have felt the same way about tennis when I was 8 cause I’m still playing it today! Its been a little over a year since I started surfing and well I’m proud to say I’m an advanced beginner. I don’t know if advanced beginner is a surfing term, but for those of you who are tennis players you know exactly what an advanced beginner is.  I’ve played tennis close to 22 years and I kind of forgot the feeling of ripping a backhand down the line for the first time. I guess I forgot the newness of being a beginner and progressing to the next level. Surfing is reminding me, in a very humbling way in fact.  You see the errors I’m used to are balls in the net, balls flying out, mis-hits which is all very frustrating……but trying to get through a breaking wave, getting slammed by the lip, almost hitting the jetty…..sharks….. a whole new way of doing a sport—it’s awesome and humbling!I think surfing has helped me be a better teaching pro, especially when I teach beginners……I guess remembering when I wasn’t so good myself is giving me new insight…..

The K-Claw Start -> Part I

I was an unemployed college grad who just left London after a three month stint as an au pair.  My girlfriend, Jennie, met me in London and we planed a little Euro trek for a month. Amsterdam was our first stop.

Jennie and I went to the Flying Pig Hostel—the Downtown location, and all the dorm rooms were booked for the next two days!  They suggested their other location—-The Flying Pig Hostel in Noordwijk, situated 30 minutes out of Amsterdam, right on the shores of the North Sea.  So off we went to the beach hostel.  It was sooo awesome.  The rooms were clean and we met some really awesome funny people.  The place had such a laid back vibe….. staying by the water always has that calming effect on people!  After our two days at the beach we headed back to the downtown hostel for some night life…….

It was open musician night at another nearby hostel….and that was the night I met Rowan….in the Red Light District of Amsterdam! Yes folks you can’t possibly find your true sole mate in some sleezy bar, but in the Red Light, anything is possible J

Rowan and I ended up talking so much that he never got on stage to perform.  He had a little travel bass guitar.  He’s quite the musician, but that’s another blog entry. Rowan was traveling the other side of the world, running away from mad  Orangutans in Sumatra, teaching English to little Taiwanese children, you know the norm!

He ended up in the Netherlands to find work.  As an Australian he was allowed a work permit for a year.  During our conversation I learned Rowan was a ninja graphic designer who designed websites for Billabong Australia, winning best website in the world award…..twice no less!! Who doesn’t want to add that to their resume?  He designed the whole fashion edition for RALPH Magazine (same as MAXIM for us)  and did some pretty smart advertisements.  Anyway the list goes on and on!!

I had a great time with him, but Jennie and I were off to Italy the next morning. I told Rowan if he gets tired of the city, he should head over to the beach hostel.  It was such a great place to get away from the crowd and get some head space. Believe me–you would want some head space after spending a few nights in the Red Light J

So to make a long story short, I had to fly out of Amsterdam to get back to H-town.  Jennie and I decided to go back to the beach hostel and chill for three days before I had to go back to reality. Lucky Jennie still had a month of travelling on her own.

Guess who was at the hostel?  Yep, Rowan was there and we spent three awesome days together on the beach!!

I know your wondering, what the heck does this have to do with K-Claw’s start…. well a lot of our brand is who we are, and you need to know our history to understand our brand’s start!!

Stay tuned for Part II J

So why “K-Claw,” you ask?

I have always loved cats since I was a little girl. Rowan (my man) and I wanted something both feminine and tough.  The original name was Kittenclaw.  I still get a kick out of a scarce few who refer to our brand as Kittenclaw. We know those peeps go way back!

We had Kittenclaw marinating in our brains for two years.  When we were ready to trademark, there was something in the universe too similar to our name . We were pretty much mentally devastated when our trademark lawyer advised us not to move forward—–as we would most likely be challenged in court (which spells out……WAY TOO MUCH $$$$ for a start up brand to defend!)

K-Claw seemed to roll off the tongue nicely! So we’re pretty stoked with the new name!!! :)
